How to Build a Consistent Movement Routine: 5 Essential Tips
As a studio owner dedicated to empowering women of colour through yoga and Pilates, I've seen firsthand how transformative a consistent movement routine can be. Life can be incredibly busy, and it's easy to let our wellness slip down the priority list. But I've also learned that making movement a regular part of your life doesn't have to be a daunting task. Here are five essential tips to help you build a consistent movement routine, inspired by my own journey and the experiences of the wonderful women in our community.
1. Start Small and Build Gradually
One of the most common mistakes is trying to do too much too soon. I remember when I first started my own wellness journey, I signed up for every class under the sun, only to feel overwhelmed and burnt out within weeks. Instead, start with small, manageable steps. Even 10 minutes of stretching or a short yoga flow can make a big difference. Gradually increase the duration and intensity as you become more comfortable and confident. Consistency is more important than intensity in the beginning.
2. Find Joy in Your Movement
Exercise should never feel like a chore. Discovering activities that you genuinely enjoy is key to maintaining a consistent routine. For me, it was the fluidity and mindfulness of yoga and the strength and precision of Pilates that captured my heart. Experiment with different types of movement until you find what brings you joy. Whether it's a high-energy dance class, a serene yoga session, or a challenging Pilates workout, the right activity will make you look forward to your movement time.
3. Schedule Your Workouts Like Appointments
We schedule meetings, appointments, and social events—why not do the same for our movement time? Treat your workouts as non-negotiable appointments with yourself. I like to set aside specific times in my calendar for my practice, just as I would for a meeting with a client. This helps create a sense of commitment and priority. And if something unavoidable comes up, reschedule your workout just as you would any important appointment.
4. Create a Supportive Environment
Surrounding yourself with support can make a world of difference. Whether it's joining a class at our studio, finding an online community, or enlisting a workout buddy, having people who encourage and motivate you can help keep you accountable. At our studio, we've built a community where women of colour can connect, share their experiences, and support each other. Being part of a supportive environment has been incredibly motivating for me and our members.
5. Listen to Your Body and Be Kind to Yourself
It's important to remember that building a consistent movement routine is a journey, not a destination. There will be days when you're full of energy and days when you need to take it easy. Listen to your body and honour what it needs. If you miss a workout or don't perform as well as you'd like, don't be hard on yourself. Every effort counts, and progress is not always linear. Practicing self-compassion and patience is just as important as the movement itself.
In my journey as a studio owner, I've learned that the path to a consistent movement routine is unique for each person. It's about finding what works for you, staying flexible, and celebrating every small victory along the way. By starting small, finding joy, scheduling your workouts, creating a supportive environment, and being kind to yourself, you can build a movement routine that enriches your life and supports your well-being.
Remember, we're here to support you every step of the way. Whether you're just starting or looking to deepen your practice, our studio is a space where you can thrive, connect, and grow. Let's move together and make wellness a joyful and integral part of our lives.
